Likewise, I think that blogs would be very useful as an aide for high school students learning a foreign language. When I was in high school, one of the things I loved about my French class was that we hardly ever had homework. Looking back on that, I know now that she never gave us homework because she knew that most parents wouldn't be able to help with it even if they were willing to help to begin with. Through the use of blogs, I would be able to have an open dialogue with students that need help in a specific facet of French and give a little more work to those who might need a little extra challenge. I have heard from a lot of people (including teachers) that every student needs an IEP. Blogging, while not perfect, is a step in the right direction of allowing students to work at their own pace and be more involved in their own education.
I have to say that I have never heard of people and teachers saying that every child needs an IEP, but I feel that comment raises a great point in education. Every child learns differently, and so why not try to specialize each child's learning experience where they can learn at the highest level. Very interesting point to tie it into blogging, because what we each are doing is learning at our own pace. I like your points and wording...It's not generic
ReplyDeleteThank you. I try my best to be more original than Dr. Pepper and actually think outside the box rather than just on the edge of it. But, it really is true that everyone learns at different rates and in different ways. Plus, there are a lot of students (like I was) that feel like school is nothing more that a place where adults are doing nothing but lecturing and not listening. Blogs would be a great way to change that preconception even if it means never commenting but bringing up in class discussion topics. It just makes sense.
ReplyDeleteI never thought about using D2L discussion boards as a way of blogging. In that case, I have blogged a lot since freshman year of college! I also took French in high school and I agree that it would have helped if we had some type of discussion board/blogging type of social networking in order to help us understand the language!
